The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) PDF Print E-mail

The following 6 levels, set by the Council of Europe, make the Common European Framework of Reference for languages.

 

LEVEL A1
Discovery level.

Abilities : The student can use and understand familiar and daily expressions, as well as simple statements contributing to satisfy basic needs. He/she can introduce him/herself or introduce someone and ask personal questions (living area, relationships, belongings...). He/she can respond to the same questions. He/she can communicate in a simple way if the person speaks slowly and clearly and is cooperative. 


 
LEVEL A2
Intermediary or survival level.

Abilities : The student can understand sentences and  familiar expressions used in familiar and daily situations (personal information, shopping, close environment, work). He/she can communicate during simple tasks requiring only a simple  information exchange on familiar and usual subjects. He/she can describe with simple words his/her education, his/her close environment and talk about familiar and usual subjects.  

 

LEVEL B1 
Threshold level. 

Abilities : The student can understand the main points when a clear and standard language is being used, and if it is about familiar situations in work, school, leisure... He/she can manage in most situations during a trip in a country where the language is spoken. He/she can give a simple and coherent speech on familiar subjets and in his/her domains of interest. He/she can tell about an event, an experience or a dream, describe a hope or a wish, and briefly stand reasons or explanations about a project or an idea.  

 

LEVEL B2 
Advanced or independant level. 

Abilities : The student can understand the content of concrete or abstract subjects in a complex text, including a technical discussion in his/her domain of specialty. He/she can communicate spontaneously and easily so that there is no tension in a conversation with a native speaker. He/she can clearly and in details express him/herself on many subjects, stand for his/her opinion, express a statement about an event in the news, and explain the advantages and inconvenients of a given solution.  

 

LEVEL C1
Autonomy level. 

Abilities : The student can understand many, various long and difficult texts, as well as get implicite meanings. He/she can express him/herself spontaneously and fluently without apparently looking for words. He/she can use the language in an effective and smooth way in his/her social, professional or academic life.  He/she can express him/herself on complicated subjects in a clear and structured way, and show his/her control of the organisational, building and coherence aspects of a speech.  

 

LEVEL C2  
Control level. 

Abilities : The student can understand almost anything he/she reads or listens to. He/she can gather, talk about, resume, any facts, arguments and events from any oral or written source. He/she can talk spontaneously, fluently and precisely and may mention thin meaning nuances about difficult, complex subjects.
